How the Lord's Supper Anchors Us

How the Lord’s Supper Anchors Us

The Lord’s Supper is a special time of intimate fellowship wherein we look back on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf in order to secure our salvation, and forward to the coming age when we will be with the Lord in the Father’s kingdom. Looking backward, we remember his sacrifice. Looking forward, we hope for a better future. Together these two blessings keep us going in the present. We can face the challenges of each day because we know that no matter what happens, Jesus died for us in the past to give us a relationship with God. Because of what he has done for us in the past we are put right with God, and nothing can ever change that. Even on our worst days we can still say, “By the gracious sacrifice of Jesus, I am forgiven and saved from eternal condemnation. Praise God.” And likewise, no matter how difficult life becomes in the present, we have something infinitely better to look forward to. We can say to ourselves, “I have the glorious, perfect, sinless, and painless kingdom of God in my future. Praise God.” So, the Lord’s Supper anchors us in the present even as it links us to the past and the future. Each observance of the Lord’s Supper reminds of these magnificent truths.
