Bible Reading - Week 17

WEEK 17

Your readings will continue to trace David’s story. You will also encounter several psalms and more genealogies.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Psalm 25:4 Make your ways known to me, LORD; teach me your paths.

DAY 1 Psalms 81, 88, 92-93

  • According to Psalm 81, what will the Lord do for Israel if they will only listen to him and follow his ways? Why do you think God’s people have such a hard time listening to him?
  • Why does the author of Psalm 88 cry out to God day and night? Do you think the writer of this psalm is hopeless? Defend your answer from the text.
  • Why does the writer of Psalm 92 find it good to give thanks to the Lord? What is true of the righteous, even in old age?
  • Name three truths about God you find in Psalm 93. Pause to give him thanks for each one. Ask him to show you how believing those truths about him can help you in some way today.

DAY 2 1 Chronicles 7-9

  • Today’s reading consists mainly of names from Israel’s history. Keep in mind as you read that every person is an important link in God’s great work of redemption.
  • Genealogies were common in the ancient Near East in places like Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon, as well as in Israel. Typically, the genealogies of the other nations trace the lineage of kings, whereas, for Israel, regular people are commonly included, underscoring that with God, everyone is important.

DAY 3 2 Samuel 5:1-10; 1 Chronicles 11-12; Psalm 133

  • Is Israel unified under David’s reign?
  • What city becomes known as the city of David?
  • What words would you use to describe David’s warriors listed in 1 Chronicles 11?
  • Take note of how David amasses a great army.
  • Psalm 133 confirms the unity Israel enjoys as David rises to power.

DAY 4 2 Samuel 5:11-6:23; 1 Chronicles 13-16

  • How does David defeat the Philistines?
  • What happens to Uzzah when he touches the ark?
  • How does David’s wife Michal react when he leaps and dances before the Lord? What is the consequence of her reaction?
  • What group does the Lord choose to carry the ark?

DAY 5 Psalms 15, 23-25, 47

  • According to Psalm 15, who can live in God’s presence? Be sure to pray that God will help you to be such a person.
  • Psalm 23 is the most familiar of all the psalms. Take time today to thank the Lord for all he does for you as indicated by this psalm.
  • Notice how verses 3-6 of Psalm 24 are similar to Psalm 15.
  • What practical changes will you make this week to live a more holy life?
  • David prays in Psalm 25 that the Lord will not remember the sins of his youth. Did you do some really foolish and ungodly things when you were younger? Have you asked the Lord to forgive you for those wrongs? How does this psalm encourage you?
  • Who reigns over the nations, according to Psalm 47?

DAY 6 Psalms 89, 96, 100-101, 107

  • Count how many times the word “forever” appears in Psalm 89.
  • According to Psalm 96, with what will the Lord judge the world?
  • What is the main theme of Psalm 100? How can you be more thankful?
  • In Psalm 101, David asserts that he will not have anything to do with what is worthless, vile, and evil. What change do you need to make for that to be true for you?
  • In Psalm 107, notice that verses 8, 15, 21, and 31 are the same.
