Bible Reading- Week 19

WEEK 19

Keep an eye out for how David’s life gets more difficult after his adultery with Bathsheba. Most of the psalms you will read this week are pleas to God for help when life gets really challenging.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Psalm 13:6 I will sing to the LORD because he has treated me generously.

DAY 1 2 Samuel 13-15

  • After David’s affair with Bathsheba, the Lord reveals that disaster will come to David and his family (2 Samuel 12:11). Chapters 13-15 describe the disaster. They stand as a vivid reminder of the price that must be paid for lapses in integrity.
  • What horrible sin does Amnon commit against his sister Tamar? Who gives him the idea for how to do it? How does Amnon feel toward Tamar afterward? Why do you think he feels this way toward her now? What does Absalom do to Amnon two years later?
  • How does Absalom steal the hearts of the men of Israel?

DAY 2 Psalms 3-4, 13, 28, 55

  • Notice how in Psalms 3 and 4 that strong confidence in the Lord produces restful sleep, even in the midst of great adversity.
  • Notice in Psalm 13 how David moves from wondering how long until the Lord hears his prayer to rejoicing and singing. What causes the change?
  • Why does David bless the Lord in Psalm 28?
  • In Psalm 55, what would David do if he had wings?

DAY 3 2 Samuel 16-18

  • What does Absalom do with David’s concubines?
  • What happens to Absalom? How does David react to the news about Absalom?

DAY 4 Psalms 26, 40-41, 58, 61-62, 64

  • Psalm 26 refers to not associating with ungodly people. Why do we need to be careful about our friends and make sure we are around good influences?
  • List several things the Lord does for his people, according to Psalms 40-41.
  • Based on Psalm 58, give a brief description of the wicked.
  • What does David long for, according to Psalm 61?
  • According to David in Psalm 62, the Lord is his rock. How is the Lord your rock?
  • Summarize the differences between the wicked and the righteous, based on Psalm 64.

DAY 5 2 Samuel 19-21; Psalms 5, 38, 42

  • 2 Samuel 19-21 further illustrate the trouble that comes on David and his people in the aftermath of his affair with Bathsheba. These chapters should encourage us to pursue holiness!
  • What contrasts in Psalm 5 do you see between the righteous and the wicked?
  • Take note of the effects of sin as described in Psalm 38.
  • Pay attention to how the writer of Psalm 42 talks to himself. Notice the good counsel he gives to himself.

DAY 6 2 Samuel 22-23; Psalm 57

  • Look for several ways the Lord is good to David as you read 2 Samuel 22.
  • According to Psalm 57, where does David go until danger passes?
