Bible Reading- Week 20

WEEK 20

This week you will see David come to the end of his reign and turn over authority to his son Solomon. You will also read several psalms that encourage you to see and savor the greatness of God.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Psalm 145:1 I exalt you, my God the King, and bless your name forever and ever.

DAY 1 Psalms 97-99

  • Today’s reading is short, giving you more time for reflection.
  • In Psalm 97, what does the Lord’s throne represent? What two characteristics dominate God’s throne? What will all people see?
  • Based on Psalm 98, what are some reasons you should sing a new song to the Lord? What standard will the Lord judge the world by?
  • Count how many times Psalm 99 says the Lord is holy. What response does Psalm 99 suggest we have to the Lord’s holiness? How will you worship the Lord today?

DAY 2 2 Samuel 24; 1 Chronicles 21-22; Psalm 30

  • David’s pride in how many men he had under his command proved very costly. How many died from Dan to Beersheba in the plague God sent as judgment?
  • Samuel says the Lord’s anger stirred David to take a census, while Chronicles says Satan incited David to do it. This is not a contradiction because God at times permits Satan to do things. The testing of Job is an example (see Job 1-2). God can use sin to accomplish his purposes (see Genesis 50:20 and Acts 2:22-23).
  • Why is David not permitted to build a house for the Lord but his son Solomon is permitted to build it?
  • What reasons for praising God do you find in Psalm 30?

DAY 3 Psalms 108-109

  • According to Psalm 108, why does David insist on God’s help?
  • Psalm 109 may seem unloving and unchristian, but it is best to take it as a call for God to judge

wickedness and to bring justice for the oppressed.

DAY 4 1 Chronicles 23-26

  • Notice how many men were to be in charge of the work of the Lord’s temple. This helps us see that the temple was a busy center of activity.
  • As you read the rather long lists of names, be sure to take time to thank the Lord for all the faithful saints who have served the Lord in ways that have specifically benefited you in some way.

DAY 5 Psalms 131, 138-139, 143-145

  • What advice does David give to Israel in Psalm 131? In what current struggle are you facing in which you need to apply this advice?
  • In what way does David promise to praise or give thanks to the Lord in Psalm 138? What does striving to meet that goal look like in your life?
  • Psalm 139 affirms that God knows everything. How is that truth a comfort to you? how might it be something that bothers or troubles someone?
  • David in Psalm 143 writes about remembering the days of old. How can that be helpful when needing answers to prayer?
  • Who does David say in Psalm 144 are blessed or happy?
  • Notice how often in Psalm 145 David says, “The LORD is.” Take time to thank him for what he is.

DAY 6 1 Chronicles 27-29; Psalm 68

  • How often did a division in David’s military serve the king personally each year?
  • Although Solomon was to build the temple, who gave him the plans for the temple?
  • How long did David reign as king over Israel?
  • As you read Psalm 68, look for various ways it describes God’s power.
