Bible Reading- Week 21

WEEK 21

This week you will read about Solomon’s reign as well as several more psalms, including the Bible’s longest psalm, Psalm 119. You will also begin reading the Song of Songs, a text that celebrates God’s gift of romantic love.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Psalm 119:11 I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.

DAY 1 Psalms 111-118

  • What reasons do you find in Psalm 111 to praise the Lord with all your heart?
  • What benefits does Psalm 112 give for fearing the Lord and taking great delight in his commands?
  • What reasons does Psalm 113 give to praise the Lord?
  • Notice how Psalm 114 underscores God’s power, which helps us understand why the earth should tremble at his presence.
  • What reasons does Psalm 116 suggest for loving the Lord?
  • Why praise and glorify the Lord, according to Psalm 117?
  • What would you say is the main theme of Psalm 118?

DAY 2 1 Kings 1-2; Psalms 37, 71, 94

  • The reading from 1 Kings traces how the kingdom is established in the hand of Solomon. Who tries to steal the throne from Solomon? Who dies before Solomon’s throne is secure?
  • Look for the end result of the wicked as you read Psalm 37. What is it?
  • Take note of how Psalm 71 is a request for the Lord’s help in old age. This psalm is a healthy reminder that as long as we remain alive, we remain dependent on the Lord.
  • Pay attention in Psalm 94 to the writer’s confidence that the Lord will protect him and repay the wicked for their evil. Ask the Lord to help you to trust him in this way.

DAY 3 Psalm 119:1-88

  • This is the longest psalm in the Bible, 176 verses. It celebrates God’s word. Pay attention as you read to all the ways it describes God’s word.

DAY 4 1 Kings 3-4; 2 Chronicles 1; Psalm 72

  • What does Solomon ask for soon after becoming king because he knows he needs help to govern more effectively? What event occurs between two prostitutes that gives Solomon the opportunity to showcase his wisdom?
  • Psalm 72 applies to the start of Solomon’s reign. What kind of society does it envision?

DAY 5 Psalm 119:89-176

  • As you complete this lengthy psalm today, consider areas of your life where you need to trust God. Look for truths about God’s word that will encourage you to trust him with what you are facing.

DAY 6 Song of Songs 1:1-5:1

  • Keep in mind that the Song of Songs is a love poem in which the lovers praise one another and yearn to be together.
  • Don’t expect to find God mentioned by name in the Song of Songs. It is not about him. Rather, it is about the excitement of romantic love.
  • Note the frequent comparisons of the lovers to objects in nature and life. You may not choose to speak of your loved one in this way, but recognize that the text is making symbolic comparisons.
  • Expect to find some explicit (but not vulgar or immoral) language.
