Bible Reading - Week 22

WEEK 22

You will complete the Song of Songs and then turn your attention to the very practical book of Proverbs. Think of the sayings in Proverbs as guidance about how life works. You will find numerous blessings and avoid many unnecessary hardships by heeding the teachings found in Proverbs.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Proverbs 4:27 Don’t turn to the right or to the left, keep your feet away from evil.

DAY 1 Song of Songs 5:2-8:14; Psalm 45

  • As you read the remainder of the Song of Songs, remember that it conveys the attraction of a man and a woman for one another.
  • Understand that the language used is not the same as we use today, but the feelings being conveyed are timeless.
  • Recall that from the beginning God has ordained that a man and a woman complete one another, therefore feelings of attraction are normal and healthy so long as they are kept within the bounds God sets.
  • How long does God’s throne last, according to Psalm 45?

DAY 2 Proverbs 1-4

  • Look for the benefits of the proverbs. You may want to make a list.
  • Take note of how many times the words “my son” appear in these chapters. What does the text repeatedly urge sons to do?
  • Based on these chapters, what are some of the most distinguishing marks of a wise person?

DAY 3 Proverbs 5-8

  • Look today for guidance regarding sexual purity. What are some of the most important keys to avoiding sexual immorality, according to these chapters? What are the costs that come to those who refuse to heed this godly counsel?
  • On a different note, what can you learn from observing an ant?
  • Look for several reasons to give God thanks for wisdom as you read chapter 8.

DAY 4 Proverbs 9-12

  • Note the contrasts in chapter 9 between wisdom and folly.
  • Notice how beginning in chapter 10 the text shifts to short statements that carry a complete thought. These proverbs are most helpful when read slowly and meditated on, so don’t rush through them.
  • Ask the Lord to direct you to one or a few that seem most helpful to you at this time in your life.

DAY 5 Proverbs 13-16

  • Watch today for how many proverbs state one truth in the first half of the verse and a contrasting truth in the second half.
  • Look for repeated themes. Repeated themes are obviously important, so determine to heed them with God’s help.

DAY 6 Proverbs 17-20

  • Today, you will encounter several proverbs that contain two statements that make the same point.
  • Be sure to take time to meditate and think through a few of the proverbs you read that speak most directly to you.
  • Take time to pray for God to help you to live by the great truths you are learning from the proverbs.
