Bible Reading - Week 33

WEEK 33

This week you will give your attention to the prophecy of Jeremiah. He has the unenviable task of proclaiming the very unpopular message that Babylon will overtake the Israelites and their only hope is to submit because it is the Lord’s will.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Jeremiah 33:3 Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know.

DAY 1 Jeremiah 17-20

  • Who is cursed and who is blessed, according to chapter 17?
  • What is wrong with the human heart, according to 17:9?
  • What is the Lord teaching in the story of the potter and the clay in chapter 18?
  • Why will the Jewish people eat their own children, according to chapter 19?
  • Describe Jeremiah’s emotions in chapter 20?

DAY 2 Jeremiah 21-24

  • How do you think you would feel if you received the news that the Lord would fight against you, the way chapter 21 describes, and the only way to survive is to surrender to your enemy?
  • Summarize in your own words the messages to each of the kings mentioned in chapter 22.
  • Described the Righteous Branch for David, mentioned in 23:5-6.
  • Why, in chapter 23, does the Lord command that people not listen to the words of the prophets? Did the Lord send out these prophets?
  • Take note of the differences between those represented by the good figs versus those represented by the bad figs in chapter 24.

DAY 3 Jeremiah 25-28

  • Notice in chapter 25 how the Lord controls Babylon, even referring to its king as “my servant” (v. 9).
  • When Jeremiah preaches an unpopular message in chapter 26, what do many want to do with him? How does he survive?
  • What is Jeremiah’s message in chapter 27?

  • What problems can you identify in Hananiah’s prophecy? Why is it a false prophecy even though he speaks as if he’s speaking for God? How can chapter 28 help you avoid being deceived by false prophets today?

DAY 4 Jeremiah 29-32

  • The letter of Jeremiah to the exiles living in Babylon is not what they want to hear because it stresses they will have to live there seventy years. Nevertheless, how is it an encouragement to the exiles?
  • Express gratitude to the Lord for the hope described in chapters 30-31.
  • What does Jeremiah’s purchase of a field in chapter 32 symbolize?

DAY 5 Jeremiah 33-37

  • What promises does the Lord make to Judah and Israel in chapter 33?
  • What does Jeremiah predict will happen to king Zedekiah in chapter 34?
  • What is the difference in chapter 35 between the Rechabites and the people of Israel?
  • According to chapter 36, what does king Jehoiakim do with the scroll Jeremiah dictated to Baruch? How does Jeremiah react?
  • Why, according to chapter 37, is Jeremiah put in prison?

DAY 6 Jeremiah 38-40; Psalms 74, 79

  • Why is Jeremiah thrown into a cistern in chapter 38? Who comes to his aide so that he gets out before he dies?
  • What happens to king Zedekiah when Babylon overtakes Jerusalem in chapter 39? What happens to his sons? To Jerusalem? Those who remained in the city?
  • What happens to Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem?
  • Notice how in the two psalms that despite great difficulty faith is not lost. When you face hard times, how can you keep your faith strong?
