Bible Reading - Week 36

WEEK 36

The focal point this week is the prophecy of Ezekiel. Look for how he stresses personal responsibility. Also be prepared to see hope in the midst of judgment.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Ezekiel 37:5 This is what the LORD GOD says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live.

DAY 1 Ezekiel 17-20

  • In the parable in chapter 17, the first eagle is Babylon, led by King Nebuchadnezzar, who captures the Israelites and takes them into captivity. The second eagle is Egypt, to whom the Israelites look for help. Will the Israelites flourish by putting their trust in a secular power instead of the sovereign Lord?
  • What do you think is the main idea in chapter 18? What gives the Lord no pleasure? What does give him pleasure?
  • Chapter 19 expresses sadness over the failure of Israelite kings in Ezekiel’s time. The kings are compared to lion cubs. Why is one caught and led away to Egypt and another to Babylon?
  • Why won’t the Lord permit the elders of Israel to speak to him in chapter 20? What evidence of the Lord’s patience do you see in chapter 20?

DAY 2 Ezekiel 21-24

  • To prove he is serious about judgment, what weapon does the Lord repeatedly promise to use against the land of Israel in chapter 21?
  • Look for the sins of the Israelites Ezekiel specifically mentions as you read chapter 22.
  • Chapter 23 describes two sisters who represent the northern and southern capitals. Each is terribly wicked, and their wickedness is described as promiscuity. How is sin like promiscuous behavior?
  • How is Ezekiel a sign to the Israelites in chapter 24?

DAY 3 Ezekiel 25-28

  • The focus of today’s reading is judgments on Israel’s neighboring nations. As you read, look for two things: the sin(s) of the nations that provoke the Lord to judgment and the thing the Lord wants the nations to know.

DAY 4 Ezekiel 29-32

  • Today’s reading is all about the Lord’s judgment against Egypt. Again, look for what the Lord wants Egypt to know. Also, take note of how Pharaoh, Egypt’s king, is depicted as a monster. What does the Lord promise to do with this monster? What will the Lord do to Pharaoh’s arms?

DAY 5 Ezekiel 33-36

  • As Israel’s watchman, what is Ezekiel’s responsibility to the house of Israel?
  • The Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. What does he prefer for them?
  • What are the sins of Israel’s shepherds?
  • What are the sins of Mt. Seir for which the Lord will judge its people?
  • What does the Lord promise to give Israel in chapter 36?

DAY 6 Ezekiel 37-40

  • What does the Lord do with the dry bones? What does this represent?
  • What do the two sticks represent?
  • What great promise for Israel do chapters 38-39 predict? Be patient as you read. The answer will become clear near the end of chapter 39.
  • Chapter 40 begins a lengthy section on the new temple that will run to the end of Ezekiel in chapter 48. You will complete that reading next week.
