Bible Reading - Week 40

WEEK 40

This week you will conclude the Old Testament (with the exception of a couple of Psalms you will read in Week 45) and begin the New Testament. You should find the New Testament easier overall, so keep reading and keep growing.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Matthew 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

DAY 1 Nehemiah 11-13; Psalm 126

  • The many names in Nehemiah 11-12 will remind you that every person matters to God. Thank God for the special people in your life who have or who continue to have a positive impact on your walk with him.
  • Notice how in chapter 12 they celebrate as they dedicate the wall to the Lord. What reasons to celebrate can you find from the events of this year in your life? What can you do to celebrate them?
  • Nehemiah is an important leader. What changes does he lead Israel to make in chapter 13?
  • What blessings come to those the Lord restores, according to Psalm 126?

DAY 2 Psalm 106; John 1:4-14

  • Take note of how Psalm 106 traces much of Israel’s history. Does it depict Israel as faithful or unfaithful? How does it depict God differently?
  • What is the role of John (John the Baptist) according to these verses from John 1?
  • Who made the world, according to these verses from John 1?
  • Who has the right to be children of God?
  • Who is the Word?

DAY 3 Matthew 1; Luke 1:1-2:38

  • Why do you think Matthew begins with a genealogy?
  • Why does Joseph want to divorce Mary? Why does he decide against the divorce?
  • Why is Joseph supposed to name Mary’s baby Jesus?

  • What does Luke say in the opening of his Gospel that leads you to believe he is a careful scholar?
  • What does the angel Gabriel say will be the job of John, the son of the aging Zechariah and Elizabeth?
  • What does Gabriel predict will happen to the virgin Mary?
  • What is the response of the angels at the birth of Jesus? Of the shepherds? Of Simeon? Of Anna? From these various responses, what do you conclude to be the appropriate reaction to Jesus?

DAY 4 Matthew 2; Luke 2:39-52

  • Yesterday you saw appropriate responses to Jesus. What is different about Herod’s response? What is similar about the response of the wise men?
  • As you continue to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life, be on the lookout for both positive and negative responses to Jesus because you will see each often.
  • According to Luke, what happens to Jesus when he is twelve years old? Why do you think we don’t have more information about his youth?

DAY 5 Matthew 3; Mark 1:1-11; Luke 3; John 1:15-34

  • What big event happens in Jesus’ life that today’s readings in Matthew, Mark, and Luke record?
  • Describe John the Baptist.
  • How old is Jesus when he begins his ministry?

DAY 6 Matthew 4:1-22; Mark 1:12-20; Luke 4:1-15; 5:1-11; John 1:35-2:12; Matthew 13:54-58; Mark 6:1-6; Luke 4:16-30
