Bible Reading - Week 41

WEEK 41

This week you will read some of the most familiar portions of the New Testament. The Sermon on the Mount and Jesus’ conversations with Nicodemus and the woman at the well are prime examples. Keep asking the Lord to empower you to live like these texts exhort you to live.

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

DAY 1 Matthew 4:23-25; 8:14-17; Mark 1:21-39; Luke 4:31-44

  • Identify the three types of ministry Jesus performs all over Galilee.
  • What kind of person does Jesus show himself to be in today’s readings?

DAY 2 John 3-5

  • According to Jesus, what has to happen before someone can see the kingdom of God?
  • Who has eternal life, according to Jesus? Read 3:20-21 closely. How do these verses dispel the myth that belief in Jesus does not have to lead to changed behavior?
  • What is different about the water Jesus offers?
  • What kind of people does the Lord want to worship him?
  • Why do the Jews begin to persecute Jesus?
  • If the people believed Moses, who else would they believe?

DAY 3 Matthew 8:1-4; 9:1-17; 12:1-212; Mark 1:40-3:21; Luke 5:12-6:19

  • From today’s readings, what can be done on the Sabbath, according to Jesus? According to the religious authorities of Jesus’ day? Who is right? Why?
  • Take note of how persistently the friends of the paralytic pursue a way to get him before Jesus. What can you learn from them?
  • Why does Jesus often withdraw to deserted places?
  • Who does Jesus come to call to repentance?
  • What does Jesus do after an all-night prayer session? Why do you think he prays so earnestly about this?

DAY 4 Matthew 5-7; Luke 6:20-49; 11:1-13

  • As you read today’s sections, be sure to take time to think about the type of person being described. What changes in your life are required for you to become that kind of person? Try to think of at least three.
  • What specific lessons about prayer do you find in today’s readings? Take a few moments to evaluate your prayer life. What is something from today’s readings that will improve your praying?

DAY 5 Matthew 8:5-13; 11:1-30; Luke 7

  • Why is Jesus so hard on the towns where he conducted most of his miracles?
  • What promise does Jesus give to all who are weary and burdened? How have you found this to be true in your life?
  • What would you think if you witnessed someone bring a dead person back to life as Jesus does in Luke 7?
  • The Pharisees are surprised that Jesus doesn’t condemn the sinful woman who washed his feet with her tears. Who do you have difficulty believing the Lord can love? Why do you think so?

DAY 6 Matthew 12:22-50; Mark 3:22-35; Luke 8:19-21; 11:14-54

  • How does Jesus prove he is not under Beelzebul, the prince of demons?
  • What will people have to give an account for on the day of judgment?
  • Who is Jesus’ family?
  • Based on the way Jesus uses the word “woe” when speaking to the Pharisees and experts in the law, what do you think it most likely means?
